The Houston Texans, struggling their way through a bumpy part of the season, defeated the irksome Tennessee Titans this afternoon to bump their record up to 5-6. The real news though, came when the greatest player in Texans franchise history, Andre Johnson, got into a fistfight with Titan Cortland Finnegan.
…
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’d like to reflect on what aspects of the Houston Texans and their 2010 season that I am thankful for. Despite the pathetic excuse for a defense, less than mediocre record and string of very disappointing last-minute losses, there are surprisingly a few things that I am thankful for.
1) Just having a team - Let’s be honest, 1996-2001 were no fun for football fans in Houston. After having the Oilers ripped from our city by money grubbing owner, Bud Adams, fans were left either sucking down any dignity they had and becoming Titans or Cowboys fans OR completely not caring about NFL football in a panic of not knowing where to turn. I fell under the latter. Then, in 1999, it was announced that in 2002 Bob McNair would be bringing NFL football back to Houston – life began again. Despite 9 disappointing seasons and having to watch David Carr disgrace the NFL football field for a number of those years, I am still very thankful to have the Texans around and to be a true fan.
2) A Running Game – Although Steve Slaton was exciting to watch during the 2008 season, the Texans really haven’t had much of a running game at all in the history of the franchise until this year. We suffered for years watching guys like James Allen, Dominick Davis “Williams”, Jonathan Wells, Ahman Green and Ron Dayne. In 2010 we are very fortunate to have a new kid on the block – Arian Foster. Foster brings a ton of excitement to the offensive side of the ball with his one-cut running style behind a very talented offensive line. His ability to make the first defender miss always leaves open the possibility that he is going to break a big one. I’m very thankful to have a fun running game to watch.
3) A Franchise Quarterback – Sure he may make mistakes from time to time. And sure he may not have the consistency of a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, but Matt Schaub is certainly a franchise quarterback whom the Texans are very fortunate to have. I hear people complain about him being soft or just not an NFL quarterback (which is absurd), but when I ask them who they’d rather have they rattle off Manning, Brady, Brees, maybe Rivers and Rogers and then can’t name anyone else. Add Vick to the list possibly, but when you look at 32 teams in the league and the 32 quarterbacks, Schaub ranks easily in the top 10. I’d much rather have that than be stuck like we were for 6 years with a bottom of the barrel joker like David Carr. In the great words of Marc Vandermeer – “THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!” Be thankful like me in finally having a franchise quarterback to build a team around.
4) A Close Division – Our boys may be having a tough year thus far, but they are certainly not out of it. Even though their record is 4-6, they are still only 2 games out of first place with 3 division games left to play. The Titans are imploding. The Colts are really, really beat up. And the Jaguars…well…they’re the Jags. If the Texans can pick up the 3 division games and beat the Broncos, they’d be 8-8. The Colts still have to face the Titans (twice), Jags, Raiders, Cowboys and Chargers – all of which could be losses as beat up as they are. If somehow they could lose 4 of those games…the Texans still have a chance. This chance is remote and would be much better if the Texans somehow ran the table, but I’m just thankful to division is this close so the season can still be exciting.
5) Four Wins - Looking at the performance of this defense, things could be much, much worse, so I am very thankful to have the Texans being lucky enough to pull off 4 wins so far in 2010.
