Serving Through The Storm

Catholic Charities celebrated the re-opening of the Beacon of Hope Center on Friday, August 7. Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas expressed her thanks to Catholic Charities and the community for their support during Hurricane Ike.

For 27 years, Catholic Charities has been providing compassionate services to those in need on Galveston Island. Fulfilling its mission to provide culturally sensitive social services to individuals, without regard to race, religion or socio-economic status, Catholic Charities provides a variety of services including help with food, clothing, financial assistance and counseling services to more than 14,900 people annually in Galveston County.

The Beacon of Hope Center was moved from its previous location on 45th due to major flooding caused by Hurricane Ike. Despite Ike’s devastation, Catholic Charities’ dedicated staff opened immediately following the storm in temporary quarters at St. Patrick’s Church to serve those in need.

“This reopening is truly a testament to the dedication of our caring staff, who put the needs of others before their own after the storm and continue to do so today,” said Harold Fattig, Southern Regional Director for Catholic Charities.
